True / False / Not Given Trainer
Use only the information in the passage. Do not decide based on what you already know or what you think is probably true.
True vs False vs Not Given in IELTS Reading
The hardest part of this question type is often deciding whether a statement is actually contradicted by the passage or whether the information simply does not appear. These are not the same thing.
TRUE
Choose True when the information in the statement agrees with what the passage says. The wording may be different, but the meaning must be supported by the text.
FALSE
Choose False when the passage gives information that contradicts the statement. There must be evidence in the text showing that the statement is wrong.
NOT GIVEN
Choose Not Given when the passage does not provide enough information to confirm or contradict the statement. Do not fill the gap with your own knowledge.
How to Answer IELTS True False Not Given Questions
Instead of guessing from individual words, compare the meaning of the statement with the relevant information in the passage.
Read the Statement
Identify the main claim and the details that could change its meaning, such as quantities, comparisons, dates or causes.
Find the Relevant Information
Locate the part of the passage discussing the same idea. Look for paraphrases rather than expecting identical wording.
Compare Meanings
Ask whether the text supports the statement, contradicts it, or does not provide enough information to decide.
Ignore Outside Knowledge
Even if you know something about the topic, your answer must come from the passage itself.
Why Students Confuse False and Not Given
False requires a contradiction. Not Given means the text does not provide the information needed to make the decision.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming missing information must be False
- Using your general knowledge of the topic
- Matching individual words instead of meanings
- Ignoring words such as all, some, only and always
- Adding information that the passage never states
- Changing a comparison or quantity without noticing
Better Habits
- Look for evidence before choosing False
- Treat Not Given as insufficient information
- Watch for paraphrasing and synonyms
- Compare the entire statement with the passage
- Underline important qualifiers mentally
- Practise explaining why each answer is correct
