How Summarize Group Discussion Works
In this integrated Listening and Speaking task, you listen to a discussion among three people and then retell the discussion in your own words. The aim is to demonstrate that you understood the whole conversation and can present it clearly and coherently.
Speakers
The discussion contains three different speakers whose contributions should be understood and represented accurately.
Preparation
After the discussion finishes, you have 10 seconds to organise your notes and prepare your spoken response.
Speaking
You have up to two minutes to summarise the discussion in your own words.
Scoring Areas
The task is evaluated for content, pronunciation and oral fluency.
How to Answer PTE Summarize Group Discussion
The goal is not to repeat every sentence. You need to understand the overall discussion, select important points and explain how the speakers' ideas relate to one another.
While Listening
- Identify the main discussion topic
- Take short notes for Speaker 1, 2 and 3
- Record key opinions rather than full sentences
- Notice agreement and disagreement
- Listen for examples that support major points
- Do not try to write down everything you hear
While Speaking
- Introduce the overall topic clearly
- Represent all three speakers where relevant
- Connect ideas logically
- Use your own wording
- Avoid simply listing disconnected sentences
- Maintain natural fluency and pronunciation

Your summary should accurately represent the discussion, including important speaker contributions and the relationships between their ideas.
Pronunciation
Your spoken English should be clear and understandable, with sounds and stress patterns that support effective communication.

Your response should flow naturally with suitable phrasing and pausing rather than frequent hesitation or broken delivery.
What to Avoid in Your Group Discussion Summary
Good performance depends on understanding and reorganising the discussion, not simply reproducing memorised language.
Avoid
- Ignoring one of the speakers completely
- Repeating the discussion word for word
- Giving only the topic without supporting points
- Listing ideas with no logical connection
- Adding information that was never discussed
- Using a memorised response that does not fit the prompt
