How IELTS Matching Headings Works
In Matching Headings questions, you match headings with paragraphs or sections of a reading text. The challenge is identifying the central idea rather than being distracted by individual details.
Main Idea
A heading should represent the general idea of the paragraph rather than a single supporting detail.
More Headings
IELTS provides more headings than paragraphs, so some options are deliberately not used.
Use Once
A heading cannot be used more than once in a Matching Headings task.
IELTS Reading
Matching Headings can appear in both Academic and General Training Reading.
A Better Way to Match IELTS Headings
Do not choose a heading simply because it repeats a word from the paragraph. Understand what the paragraph is mainly doing and then compare that idea with the available headings.
Read the Headings
Notice the meaning of each heading and identify important differences between similar options.
Find the Main Idea
Read the paragraph for its overall message instead of collecting isolated keywords.
Eliminate Distractors
Reject headings that describe only an example, minor detail or idea that appears briefly.
Confirm the Match
Ask whether the heading could reasonably summarise the entire paragraph from beginning to end.
Why Matching Headings Can Be Difficult
Several headings may contain vocabulary connected with the paragraph, but only one should accurately represent its main idea.
Avoid
- Matching headings only because the same keyword appears
- Choosing a heading based on one example
- Ignoring contrast words such as however or although
- Reading every sentence with equal attention
- Using a heading more than once
- Assuming the first sentence always contains the complete answer
Do Instead
- Identify the paragraph's overall purpose
- Look for repeated ideas rather than repeated words
- Notice how examples support a broader point
- Compare similar headings carefully
- Eliminate options that are too narrow
- Check whether your heading covers the entire paragraph
