How Sentence Completion Works
Sentence Completion tests your ability to locate specific information in a passage and select the exact word or words needed to complete a sentence.
Answers from the Passage
The missing word or words are taken from the reading text.
Follow Instructions
The permitted number of words or numbers can vary between tasks.
Information Order
The questions follow the same order as the relevant information in the passage.
Specific Information
The task tests whether you can find and understand precise details.
A Better Sentence Completion Method
Before searching the passage, understand what the incomplete sentence needs. Grammar and context can help you predict the type of answer you should look for.
Read the Word Limit
Know exactly how many words or numbers you are allowed to enter before looking for the answer.
Predict the Grammar
Decide whether the gap probably needs a noun, adjective, number or another grammatical form.
Scan for Meaning
Search for the same idea rather than expecting the sentence to repeat the passage word for word.
Check the Sentence
Read the completed sentence again and make sure the answer fits grammatically and logically.
Avoid Losing Easy Reading Marks
Sentence Completion is often less about understanding difficult vocabulary and more about following instructions precisely.
Common Problems
- Writing more words than the instruction allows
- Using your own synonym instead of words from the text
- Copying unnecessary words around the answer
- Ignoring whether the sentence needs a singular or plural noun
- Searching only for identical wording
- Missing spelling errors in the final answer
Better Habits
- Underline the word limit before starting
- Predict the grammatical form needed in the gap
- Look for paraphrased ideas in the passage
- Take the answer directly from the text
- Check the completed sentence for meaning
- Review spelling before moving to the next question
