IELTS Matching Information Practice
Practise locating specific information across IELTS Reading paragraphs. Match details, examples, reasons, descriptions and comparisons with the paragraph where the information appears.
Matching Information Trainer
Read the statements and decide which paragraph contains the information described. You are matching specific information, not the main idea of each paragraph.
Which Paragraph Contains the Information?
Choose the paragraph letter that contains the specific detail described in each statement.
Your Results
How IELTS Matching Information Works
You identify which paragraph or section contains a particular piece of information. The focus is on scanning for specific details, examples, explanations or comparisons.
Specific Information
The task tests your ability to scan a text and locate precise information quickly.
Paragraph Letters
Paragraphs or sections are identified by letters and you select the appropriate one.
Letters May Repeat
When the instructions permit it, the same paragraph can answer more than one question.
Not Main Ideas
Unlike Matching Headings, this task focuses on specific pieces of information rather than paragraph main ideas.
A Better Matching Information Method
Matching Information becomes much easier when you search for distinctive ideas rather than trying to read every paragraph slowly from beginning to end.
Read the Statements
Identify distinctive concepts, names, comparisons or reasons that will be easier to locate in the text.
Scan the Paragraphs
Move quickly through the text looking for related ideas, synonyms and distinctive details.
Read Locally
Once you find a likely paragraph, read that part carefully enough to confirm the exact meaning.
Reuse if Allowed
Do not eliminate a paragraph simply because you already used its letter when the instructions permit repetition.
Matching Information vs Matching Headings
These two IELTS question types may look similar because both use paragraphs, but they require different reading skills.
Matching Information
- Search for a specific fact, example or explanation
- A paragraph may contain several possible answers
- The same paragraph may sometimes be used more than once
- Scanning is especially important
- You do not need to summarise the entire paragraph
- Small supporting details can be the answer
Matching Headings
- Identify the main idea of a paragraph or section
- Ignore details that do not represent the overall message
- A heading is not used more than once
- Understanding paragraph purpose is especially important
- Examples usually support the main idea rather than become the answer
- The best heading should cover the paragraph as a whole

IELTS Matching Information FAQs
Common questions about paragraph matching, repeated letters and the difference between Matching Information and Matching Headings.
What is IELTS Matching Information?
You are given several pieces of information and must identify which paragraph or section of the reading text contains each one.
What kind of information might I need to find?
The task can require you to locate specific details, examples, reasons, descriptions, comparisons, summaries or explanations.

Yes, when the task instructions say that a paragraph or letter may be used more than once.
Does every paragraph have to be used?
