Map & Plan Skills

Follow the Speaker Through the Visual

Map and plan questions require you to connect spoken descriptions with positions on a visual. The most useful clues are often direction words, reference points and changes of movement.

01

Find the Starting Point

Locate the entrance, gate, reception area or other obvious reference before the recording begins.

02

Follow Directions

Listen for phrases such as straight ahead, opposite, beside, beyond and on the left or right.

03

Use Known Labels

Existing labels provide landmarks that help you recover your position if you lose track.

04

Ignore Distractors

A speaker may mention an alternative location before giving the final correct one.

Practice Strategy

Prepare the Visual Before You Listen

Use the short preparation time to understand the orientation of the map or plan instead of trying to interpret the visual for the first time while the recording is already playing.

A

Scan the Answer Bank

Notice the locations you may need to identify before the audio starts.

B

Check Orientation

Find north, the entrance and any roads, corridors or fixed landmarks.

C

Track Continuously

Mentally move through the map as the speaker moves rather than treating every question independently.

D

Recover Quickly

If you lose the speaker, wait for the next named landmark and re-establish your position.

Practice audio note: All maps, plans, scripts and questions on this page are original Victoria Academy practice material. Audio is generated with your browser's built-in speech system and is not an official IELTS recording. Voices and pause behaviour can vary slightly by browser and device.

IELTS Listening Preparation

Don't Just Hear the Directions — Follow Them.

Map and plan questions become much easier when you learn to track a speaker from one reference point to another instead of trying to remember isolated direction words.

What language should I listen for?

Direction and location language is particularly important, including phrases such as opposite, next to, beyond, on the left, at the end and straight ahead.

Why are some places already labelled?

No. The scenarios and maps are original practice material and the audio is generated using your browser's speech system.

Can I pause the practice recording?

Yes. This trainer includes practice controls so you can pause and resume from the same point. These controls are learning features, not a simulation of the restrictions of the real IELTS recording.
